Most volunteer tutors meet with their student for an hour at the same time each week. We ask that you commit to tutor for at least four months. Of course you can always take additional tutoring slots if your schedule allows.
In some programs we receive a list of topics or a lesson schedule of what the student is learning in school so the tutor can align their lessons with the school. Unfortunately we don’t have this for all our programs. The beauty of one-on-one tutoring is that you can personalize the lesson and topic you’ll cover to what the student needs- whether that be math, science, history, geography, English, reading, writing, etc. We encourage the tutors to get to know the student, learn their student’s strengths/weaknesses, and “teach people not lessons.” The value of this tutoring isn’t just academic progress—it also instills confidence, improves communication skills, and creates friendships.
Sickness, vacation, exams, etc. happen occasionally. Communicate with the program manager if you need to miss a session. If several sessions are missed we may need to figure out a different time that works.
Skype is the main conferencing tool we use. It’s free to sign up. Once you’re all set to begin tutoring we will send you the details of who to connect with.
Thanks for asking! Many ways, actually. Please follow us on social media to stay updated on IVI happenings. If circumstances allow, we would appreciate a donation. Our organization is 100% volunteer-led and 100% of funds donated go toward our programs and helping the children we tutor.
